White Like Her: My Family's Story of Race and Racial Passing

Mystery author, Gail Lukasik, will talk about her book White Like Her, as well as her two appearances on PBS’ Genealogy Roadshow. After discovering her mother’s hidden racial identity, her mother swore her to secrecy. For 17 years she kept her mother’s secret. Three months after her mother’s death, she appeared on Genealogy Roadshow and revealed to 1.5 million people that her mother passed for white. Gail will share how her personal and genealogical journey to uncover the truth of her mother’s racial heritage led her to a deeper understanding of race and racial identity. Walter Cronkite

Historian Jim Gibbons will present the life of Walter Cronkite. He made a name for himself in American Broadcast Journalism, often being called the “most trusted man in America.” Cronkite received the most fame from his position as an anchorman for CBS News from 1962 to 1981. During that time, he covered some of America’s most important historical events including the Nuremberg trials, Watergate, the Iran hostage crisis, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lennon of The Beatles. Cronkite led audiences in the broadcast of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, breaking the news to a shocked nation.
